James Maxwell and Matthew Boyd continue captaincy roles for Clogher Valley 3rd XV

Clogher Valley Rugby Football Club’s 3rd XV is being led this season by co-captains James Maxwell and Matthew Boyd
CLOGHER Valley Rugby Football Club’s 3rd XV is being led this season by co-captains James Maxwell and Matthew Boyd, two committed club members who bring a strong understanding of the squad.
At 22, James plays in the front row and has been involved with the club since leaving school.
A full-time farmer, James enjoys being part of a squad with a good group of players and a consistent core of team members, which he believes makes preparations and performances more straightforward from week to week.
James also has strong family connections to the club, with his brother David playing for the 1st XV and his parents regularly supporting the team from the sidelines.
Matthew, aged 23, has been wearing a blue and green jersey for more than 16 years, having first joined the club’s Minis at the age of seven. Playing mainly at flanker, but occasionally featuring on the wing, Matthew is now in his third year as captain of the 3rd XV, having previously shared the role with Luke Cuthbertson.
Over that time, he has witnessed progress within the squad and believes the improvement in the quality of the team, alongside greater consistency in player availability, has made a noticeable difference on the pitch.
Away from rugby, Matthew works as a software engineer and maintains his fitness by playing five-a-side football during the week.
Rugby also runs in the family, with his sister Hollie representing Clogher Valley’s Women’s team. His parents are enthusiastic supporters, while his mum also plays her part in looking after the teams by providing food for the players.
With James and Matthew continuing their roles, the 3rd XV will be looking to build on the progress made in recent seasons and continue representing the club with pride throughout the 2026/27 season.
