A Magherafelt man has been returned for trial on two charges of non-fatal strangulation or asphyxiation involving a female.

The 32-year-old also faced a charge of criminal damage of a mobile phone belonging to the alleged victim when he appeared a preliminary enquiry at the Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Jason Young, of Killyboggin Road, is alleged to have committed the offences on February 23 this year.

Prosecuting counsel said Young has a prima facie case to answer.

District Judge Conor Heaney said the defendant has a case to answer based on the papers before the court.

When the court clerk asked if he wished to say anything in answer to the charges, or tender a written statement of evidence, the defendant replied “no.”

The district judge released Young on bail of £500 and returned him for arraignment at Londonderry Crown Court on November 12.

The judge made it a condition of the bail that he has no contact with the injured party.
