'Much-needed' Cookstown bypass moves a step closer

INFRASTRUCTURE Minister, Liz Kimmins, has welcomed the latest development on proposals for a Cookstown bypass.
The Sinn Fein politician says the "much-needed scheme" has moved another step forward with approval of an 'outline business case'.
Proposals include around 2.4 miles of carriageway from Loughry roundabout on the Dungannon Road (A29) to the south of Cookstown, with a new roundabout on the Moneymore Road (A29) and an upgrade to Sandholes Link Road.
Minister Kimmins said: “The A29 Cookstown Bypass is a much-needed scheme and will help to relieve traffic congestion within Cookstown town centre, reduce journey travel times along the A29 link corridor, improve road safety and enhance the town centre environment.
"The decongestion benefits of the scheme will also provide significant opportunities for the enhancement and reshaping of Cookstown town centre to promote sustainable travel choices.
"The approval of the Outline Business Case is the next welcome step to see this bypass become a reality.
"The scheme is part of the Mid South West Growth Deal and as well as the benefits in terms of transport and connectivity, it will also bring economic and community benefits to the County Tyrone town.”
The A29 Cookstown Bypass was first proposed in 1978 as part of the East Tyrone Area Plan.
No timescale has been outlined for delivery of the long-awaited road.
