Cookstown development to be named ‘Brookmill Meadow’

A NEW housing development, consisting of 22 dwellings off Orritor Road, Cookstown, is going to be named ‘Brookmill Meadow’.
At October 13 Environment Committee meeting of Mid Ulster District Council, councillors had been given a choice between ‘Brookmill Meadow’ and ‘Brookmill Manor’.
Councillor John McNamee (Sinn Féin, Cookstown DEA) proposed ‘Brookmill Meadow’. This was seconded by Councillor Christine McFlynn (SDLP, Magherafelt DEA).
The developer justified both name suggestions as follows: “Wellbrook is located in the general area. It links to the close-by Wellbrook Mill without using ‘Wellbrook’.
This is the second time that the developer has had to come up with possible names for the new housing development.
Back at the May 12 Environment Committee meeting, the developer had suggested ‘Rockfields, ‘Rockfield Meadows’ and ‘Stonefield Meadows’.
The developer explained at the time that these suggested names were a reference to the presence of stones and rocks on the site.
Councillor Donna Mullin (Sinn Féin, Cookstown DEA) was clearly unhappy with the names being proposed.
She commented at the time: “I think we should go back to the developers on this one. I don’t believe that any of the names suggested reflect the area in any way.
“So, I suggest that we defer this and go back to the developers. Even if they could work with the community or even with ourselves to come up with some ideas, but none of these names reflect the area at all.”
