A DUNGANNON apprentice electrician, who had just passed his test, was caught speeding on the M1.
The 18-year-old appeared before Craigavon Magistrates Court.
Shea Sommerville, from Millview Manor, Dungannon, pleaded guilty to speeding while a restricted driver.
Police on mobile patrol spotted a Seat Leon with R plates, speeding on the M1 eastbound near Junction 12 on March 17 this year.
Sommerville was clocked travelling at 79mph. The limit for R drivers is 45mph.
The defendant's barrister said: "There is no excuse for the speed.” He explained his client is currently an apprentice electrician.
He works four days per week and attends college on another day. He travels extensively across Northern Ireland and “does a lot of miles”.
"He comes from an extremely respectable family, none of whom have ever been in trouble," said the lawyer.
District Judge Michael Ranaghan gave Somerville five penalty points and fined him £200 plus £15 offender levy and gave him 16 weeks to pay.
