MID Ulster District Council is celebrating a successful day at the 2026 Northern Ireland Best Kept Awards, with three locations across the district receiving top honours.
Magherafelt was awarded the prestigious title of Best Kept Medium Town, recognising the outstanding efforts that help make the town an attractive, welcoming and vibrant place for residents, businesses and visitors alike.
In the judge’s comments, Magherafelt was described as “always a pleasant place to visit”, noting that it has much to offer both local people and visitors. Particular praise was given to the sculpture at the top of Broad Street, which was highlighted as an example of how public art can enhance the appearance and appeal of town centres. The judge also commended Mid Ulster District Council staff for their role in maintaining the town to such a high standard.
Organised by the Northern Ireland Amenity Council (NIAC), the Best Kept Awards recognise excellence in environmental stewardship, civic pride, sustainability and community engagement.
Adding to the celebrations for the district, Donaghmore was named runner-up in the Best Kept Small Village category, while Coolnafranky Park, Cookstown, secured the Best Kept Medium Housing Area Award.
Chair of Mid Ulster District Council, Deirdre Varsani, welcomed the success: “These awards are a fantastic recognition of the pride that exists across our district. We are delighted to see Magherafelt recognised as the Best Kept Medium Town for the second year in a row and equally proud of the achievements of Donaghmore and Coolnafranky Park at this year’s NIAC Awards.
“This success reflects the dedication of Council staff, residents, community groups, businesses, and volunteers who work throughout the year.”
